Scotch Eggs

Scotch Eggs are a classic savory snack made by wrapping hard-boiled eggs in seasoned sausage, coating them in breadcrumbs, and frying them to crispy perfection. A hearty treat perfect for breakfast, lunch, or as an appetizer.

Ingredients:

  • 6 large eggs (4 hard-boiled, 2 raw)
  • 1 pound ground sausage meat (pork or turkey)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Steps:

  1. Boil the Eggs:
Place 4 eggs in a saucepan and cover them with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 7 minutes for a medium-soft yolk or 9 minutes for a fully set yolk. Transfer the eggs to an ice bath to cool, then carefully peel them.

  2. Prepare the Sausage Mixture:
In a bowl, mix the ground sausage with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Divide the mixture into four equal portions.

  3. Wrap the Eggs:
Flatten one portion of sausage into a thin patty. Place a boiled egg in the center and carefully wrap the sausage around it, ensuring the egg is completely covered. Repeat with the remaining eggs.

  4. Coat the Eggs:
Set up a breading station with three bowls: one with flour, one with the remaining 2 raw eggs (beaten), and one with breadcrumbs. Roll each sausage-wrapped egg in flour, dip it in the beaten eggs, and coat it with breadcrumbs.

  5. Fry the Scotch Eggs:
Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or saucepan to 350°F (175°C). Carefully lower the eggs into the oil and fry for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate.

  6. Serve:
Slice the Scotch Eggs in half and serve warm or at room temperature. They’re delicious on their own or with mustard or a tangy dipping sauce.

Scotch Eggs are a delightful mix of textures and flavors, offering a crispy crust, savory sausage, and perfectly cooked egg inside. Great for any occasion, they’re as versatile as they are tasty!
