Croque Monsieur

The Croque Monsieur is a classic French sandwich made with ham, melted cheese, and a rich béchamel sauce, all toasted to golden perfection. It’s an indulgent and satisfying dish, ideal for lunch or a special treat.

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of white or whole wheat bread
  • 4 slices of deli ham
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese (or Emmental cheese)
  • 1/2 cup béchamel sauce (recipe below)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Butter (for spreading on bread)

For the Béchamel Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Béchamel Sauce:
    In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it forms a smooth paste. Gradually whisk in the milk, making sure to eliminate any lumps. Cook for another 3-5 minutes, stirring continuously, until the sauce thickens. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Set aside to cool slightly.

  2. Assemble the Sandwiches:
    Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each slice of bread. On the opposite side of 4 slices, spread a bit of Dijon mustard, if using. Layer each mustard-covered slice with a slice of ham, followed by a generous amount of grated cheese. Place the remaining bread slices on top, buttered side up.

  3. Cook the Sandwiches:
    Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.

  4. Add the Béchamel and Cheese:
    Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet. Spoon some béchamel sauce over the top of each sandwich and sprinkle with more grated cheese.

  5. Finish in the Oven:
    Bake the sandwiches in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese on top is bubbly and golden.

  6. Serve:
    Remove the Croque Monsieur from the oven and serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
